What WCAG conformance level should we aim for?

Posted by Noah Senecal-Junkeer – August 10, 2026

Level AA is the working standard Easy Surf audits against unless a law, policy, or procurement requirement calls for something else.

We audit against Level AA unless your situation calls for something else. It's also the level most accessibility legislation and procurement requirements point to.

The three levels

  • Level A is the minimum. Meeting it can still leave significant barriers, so it should be a starting point rather than the end goal.
  • Level AA is the common working standard. It includes every Level A and Level AA success criterion.
  • Level AAA includes additional criteria to draw from when they suit your content. The WCAG standard advises against making AAA conformance a general policy for entire sites because some content can't satisfy every AAA criterion.

Which version

As of October 7, 2026, WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C Recommendation. It was first published in October 2023 and updated in December 2024. It's the version we most often audit against.

Legislation often lags behind the current version. Different laws name different versions, and some Canadian requirements point to EN 301 549. That edition maps to WCAG 2.1 Level AA and adds technology requirements beyond WCAG.

But don't worry, we help you decide which level and version is right for you!
