Summary
A comprehensive funding initiative supporting strategic investments in the Trans Canada Trail network, with the goal of fostering a safe, inclusive, and resilient national trail. Funds infrastructure and adaptation (repairs, maintenance, safety upgrades, new construction, active transportation), signage, and a Trails for All accessibility stream that supports projects removing barriers and creating welcoming trail experiences for users of all abilities. This is a broader trail program; accessibility is one of several eligible purposes. Funding covers up to 100 per cent of costs for projects to $1,500, up to 50 per cent to $25,000, 50 per cent of the first $25,000 and 35 per cent of the rest for projects of $25,001 to $40,000, and up to 35 per cent above $40,000, with no dollar ceiling on those bands; a project may be phased over two years. The September 9, 2026 stream sheet sets separate caps: Trail Care up to $1,500 per trail section a year (a second request is possible for winter activities); Disaster Relief, off-Trail Indigenous-led projects and Trail Crew Training up to 100 per cent to $10,000; interpretive signage up to $3,000 new or $1,000 renovated; the youth wage subsidy up to 50 per cent to $3,500 per employee; and Planting for Tomorrow up to 50 per cent. Applications are reviewed and responded to quarterly. As of the current fiscal year the fund is fully allocated, with remaining funds reserved for emergency needs; applications are still accepted and will generally be considered for the next year’s cycle, while Trail Care, emergency, signage, tree-planting and smaller projects completing by December continue to be intaken.
Eligibility
Organizations that own or manage a section of the Trans Canada Trail and are in good standing with Trans Canada Trail, with at least $2 million in general liability insurance. Eligibility may extend to broader trail-sector organizations for tree planting, trail training and Indigenous-led trail projects. Applicants cannot hold more than three Trail Catalyst Fund projects at a time.
