Summary

Increases accessibility in Port Colborne by funding custom-built, temporary portable ramps for businesses and organizations with a single-step entrance, for people who use mobility devices or strollers or who have difficulty with a step. The business pays the StopGap Foundation for the ramp and delivery, and the City reimburses the full amount, less HST, once proof of payment is submitted; the business is responsible for maintenance, repair and replacement, including snow and ice removal. No building permit is needed, and ramps arrive four to six weeks after payment and the agreements are complete. Funding is limited and applicants are selected first come, first served; applications include photos of the storefront and step.

Eligibility

Businesses and organizations located in Port Colborne with a single step of 2 to 7 inches (5.08 to 17.78 cm) at the main public entrance and enough sidewalk clearance to deploy the ramp safely. Applicants pay the StopGap Foundation up front, sign a user agreement with the Foundation and an indemnity agreement with the City, and provide an annual certificate of insurance for $5 million in liability coverage naming the City as an additional insured; some locations must also name other parties. The ramp is used on request, only during business hours, and stored indoors when not in use.
